MaZimba came to us with a clear ambition — build a digital home for Zimbabweans living abroad. The diaspora was scattered across platforms, with no dedicated space that understood their culture, language, and the specific experience of living between two worlds.

Our job was to listen first. We spent the first two weeks talking to people in the community — in Manchester, London, Leeds and online — before a single screen was designed. What we heard shaped everything: people wanted to feel seen, not served.

"We didn't want another generic social app. We wanted something that felt like it was made by someone who understood us — because it was."

— Early beta tester, Manchester

Every design decision was grounded in cultural context. The colour palette drew from Zimbabwe's landscape — red earth, green highlands, golden savannah. Typography was chosen for warmth and readability across older devices common in the community.

We built the app in React Native for true cross-platform performance, with a Node.js backend handling real-time messaging, event listings, and a community directory. The entire codebase was built to be handed over — documented, structured, and ready for the client's own team to grow.

How we got there

The process.

01
Discovery & Research
Two weeks of community interviews, competitor analysis and cultural research before a single wireframe was drawn.
02
Design & Prototype
High-fidelity Figma prototypes shared back with the community for feedback. Three rounds of iteration.
03
Build & Launch
React Native frontend, Node.js backend. Full documentation and a handover session so the client owns it completely.
